Africa conservation framework
WWF Africa
● OVERVIEW
Collaborating with WWF’s Regional Office for Africa (ROA), we supported the development of their 2020-2025 Conservation Framework to connect the vision and mission of conservation across all offices. The framework serves as a roadmap for achieving conservation goals that are relevant to the people and contexts in which WWF works, and that also align with the global priorities of the organisation.
The framework helped expand the scope of what WWF could offer the region by reinforcing the interconnectedness of development and nature and identifying ways to work with and not against regional and global trends that impact Africa.
● THE CHALLENGE
Across Africa, the resource needs of people and communities continue to grow due to increasing demographic expansion, an explosion of youth, a rising middle class, and the development of large-scale infrastructure and extractive industries. Traditional conservation approaches have failed to effectively integrate these drivers of development and, as a result, struggle to protect species, habitats, landscapes and seascapes on which both humans and wildlife depend.
● THE PROJECT
Partnering with WWF Africa, we worked to create the Africa Conservation Framework (2020-2025).
● TOGETHER WE
Conducted in depth interviews and focus groups to assess efficiencies, gaps and opportunity areas across the different offices and practice areas.
Defined an inclusive conservation approach for people and nature
Designed five pathways to impact
Aligned individual offices’ conservation priorities to WWF’s global goals
Assisted the ROA to effectively communicate the impact of the framework
● THE RESULT
WWF’s Conservation Framework for Africa outlines the organisation’s vision and strategy for five years (2020-2025) and sets a roadmap to assist all 13 country offices in identifying and acting on regional issues and emerging opportunities. This Framework spoke to pan-African priorities and set an agenda that delivers ambitious outcomes for Africa across the conservation sector.

WWF Africa Conservation Framework
● THE FUTURE
WWF has a bespoke framework for delivering, evaluating, monitoring, reporting and coordinating conservation across the region and the operational model needed to ensure the outcomes of the framework are achieved.
Moreover, the Framework provides collaboration pathways between country conservation teams, landscape initiatives and global practices to deliver programs that expand, rather than duplicate, efforts.
