Accelerating Australian sports innovation

● OVERVIEW
Working with Ernst & Young (EY) and the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), we set out to explore and design a solution for the innovation challenges impacting Australia’s sports system.
Undertaking a human-centred design approach and engagement with a range of stakeholders, we co-designed the Australian Sports Innovation Hub (ASIH), a connector and catalyst for sports-related innovation, helping create solutions for the most complex challenges in Australian sport.
● THE CHALLENGE
Australia has a proud history of sporting greats, many of them enabled by breakthrough innovations in technology and training. However, the innovations required to solve big challenges facing Australian sport, like concussion and community-based sports participation, increasingly require a coming together of disciplines, sectors, and stakeholders to enhance outcomes through collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Additionally, the innovators themselves need support to rapidly build, test, refine and launch their ideas into the market.
Australian Sports Innovation requires a focal point providing investors, entrepreneurs, researchers, sportspeople, and the community with direction, support, and the initial spark to help turn great ideas into enduring and meaningful impacts for both elite athletes and the community.
● THE PROJECT
By collaborating with EY, our two teams worked to engage a range of stakeholders and develop a strategy for the ASIH, which ensured its strength in solving complex sports innovation challenges.
● TOGETHER WE:
Defined project intent, scope and requirements, allowing us to design research and workshop materials bespoke to the project needs
Engaged 120+ people across the industry through workshops, interviews, a symposium, and Industry Advisory Panels (IAP)
Generated both qualitative and quantitative insights within the industry, resulting in a strategy report, operating and governance models, as well as an economic analysis of the ASIH
Provided an implementation roadmap to oversee the successful realisation of the ASIH
● THE RESULT
In partnership with the ASC, we developed a strategy and governance model for the Hub that encapsulates the diversity of stakeholder needs across this complex ecosystem. Reflected in the flexibility of the proposed services of the ASIH, this platform will help solve Australia’s most complex sports challenges through connection, collaboration and innovation excellence.

● THE FUTURE
When implemented, the ASIH will not only help Australia shape more competitive sporting elite athletes, but it will help all Australians receive the benefits of improved participation in sport, helping to lift our quality of life and ensure we remain physically and mentally, healthy.
